Well-being and Mental Health

Buckden C of E Primary Academy is an inclusive school. We consult with a wide range of agencies and partnerships to ensure the Emotional and Social Development needs of all pupils including those SEN children are met. We believe that a positive, supporting, and caring ethos is pivotal to a strong personal education which provides the opportunity for pupils to develop high self-esteem. It is crucial to support and promote the emotional wellbeing of all children. On a daily basis the class teacher is responsible for the pastoral and social care of every child in their class, therefore this would be the parents’ first point of contact should further advice or support be required.

Buckden C of E Primary has and maintains close links with External Partnerships; In order to access the best professional advice, we also link with Local Authority and Private Providers of additional services, such as Occupational Therapy, CAHMS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service) School Nursing Service, Social Services and Medical Professionals.

As a school we have a very positive approach to all types of behaviour with a positive behaviour system that is followed by all staff and pupils. We have key members of staff who are the STEPS Approach Trained (Trainer Level) and this forms the basis of our behaviour management approach in school.

We have nurture groups and are now a designated 'Thrive' Approach setting.  We have buddy groups (made up of children from every year group in school, that meet with their buddy group leader every 3 weeks to discuss how they are all finding things in school and how we can improve their experiences.

We have a variety of groups in school including 'Playground Buddies' where a group of children in both Key Stages are trained to act as a buddy on our playgrounds. They organise and play with the children and help them to establish friendships and keep play going.  We have designated members of staff who support play at lunch times for those pupils who may struggle socially.

The children also receive awards for displaying behaviour which falls in line with our Christian and Buckden Values weekly in whole school assemblies.

Philosophy 4 Children is currently being explored as a vehicle for children to have a weekly opportunity to learn about and discuss different issues which affect people on an emotional level. We ensure that British Values are embedded across our school days and events.

We actively work with pupils on their Zones of Regulation. (More information can be find on the dedicated page listed on the right hand side.
