      Reading:

Please read daily with your child and log on Boom Reader or in your child’s reading diary. We will be following up with children who are reading less than three times a week at home. If you would like a paper reading diary to record your reading at home, please let us know and we can provide one for you.

      Handwriting:

Any opportunity to practise writing your letters using our cursive script at home would greatly help with developing and improving your child’s handwriting. We are focusing on ensuring our small letters are small, our tall letters are tall (and long) and that they are consistent in size.

      Maths:

Please practise on Doodle Maths – fifteen minutes every day will help your child stay in the Green Zone! We will set an assignment for your child to do each Friday, to be completed by the following Friday.

      Spellings:

We will be sending home a list of words for your child to practise at home each Tuesday. Don’t forget to practise this week’s spelling rule, adding suffixes to words ending in the –y sound (cry, fly, shy) where we drop the y and add an i when adding s, ed, but not when adding er, est and ing.

      This week!

Ruby has enjoyed our RE learning this week, where we have learned about Ramadan, a time of year where Muslims fast during the day and consider those who are less fortunate than us.

      Sonny has enjoyed

Charlie and Hugo have enjoyed Maths this week, where we have learning about division by grouping. We know that the biggest number has to be divided into groups of an amount, and we count the number of groups to find the answer.

Sophie enjoyed Art this week, where the children learned all about Max Ernst, a German artist who created ‘frottage’ which means rubbing. The children used pastels to create different rubbings by laying paper onto different textures and then create a collage using their rubbings.

      Have a lovely weekend.

      This week!

Sophie, Sonny and Ruby have enjoyed our English learning this week, where we planned, prepared and wrote a diary entry about our journey under the sea. We made sure to include key events, our emotions at the time and we even challenged ourselves to use ‘because’ to explain why we were feeling that way. All of the children gave their independent writing a really good go and we are so proud of their finished diary entries!

George, Hugo, Harry and lots of other children have enjoyed learning about shapes this week! We have drawn around a range of 2D shapes, learned their names and how to spell them, as well as looked at their properties. We now know how many sides and vertices that lots of different 2D shapes have.

Phoebe has enjoyed Geography this week where we have learned about the different sources of water on our planet, including those that are made naturally such as a pond, rivers and streams and rainwater, as well as those made by humans, which include wells, dams and tubewells!

Jonah and lots of other children enjoyed Charlie’s 3 minute talk this week, where he brought a sturgeon into class and could share lots of facts all about it!

      Have a lovely weekend.

      This week!

Thank you to everyone who has read our homework expectations letter – the number of you who are reading at home regularly and completing your doodle learning has improved significantly – this will continue to help your child make progress with their reading and their maths, and we really appreciate your support.

Harry, Hugo and lots of other children have enjoyed our Science learning this week, where we have started an investigation into which conditions make germs grow the fastest. We touched a slice of bread with dirty hands, clean hands (soap) and clean hands (sanitiser) and have zipped the bread in a bag which we have taped to our cupboard door in order to observe the growth of mould over a period of two weeks. We predicted which bread we thought would grow mould the fastest and talked about why we think this is. We are looking forward to seeing the bread change and hope it doesn’t smell too much!

Phoebe has enjoyed our Reading this week, where we have continued to focus on our shared reading book, Kongy arrives. It is quite a lengthy read but the children can remember what happened and can answer questions about the text.

Dougie has enjoyed our English learning this week, where we have continued the Beast’s journey into the water – and then turned our focus onto Jellyfish. We have explored what Jellyfish are like, thinking about their appearance and their movement, and have turned our phrases into poems which we have written up in neat today!

Seb has enjoyed our RE learning this week, where we have been learning about how Muslims are encouraged by their God, Allah, to show compassion for living things. We looked at how some cats and dogs aren’t lucky enough to have homes, and that some people who are very kind, give up their time to adopt them and look after them, giving them a forever home.

Bertie has loved our English work this week where he wrote a lovely poem about a Jellyfish, and has loved handwriting too!

The children have worked really hard this week, we have given them two Maths test papers to try, which Amelia and lots of the others enjoyed completing, which has shown us how much progress the children have already made, even though we aren’t even half way through the year yet! We are really proud of the children’s resilience and determination.

      Have a lovely weekend.

Dougie and Amelia have enjoyed learning about the character in our new class reading book, ‘The Beast’. We have thought about what we know, what we think we know and we have used our ideas to write a character description about the Beast.

Sophie, Hugo and lots of others have enjoyed Science this week, where we learned all about germs (both bad and good!), how quickly and easily they can spread, and how we can stop them!

Grace and Abel have enjoyed Global Learning this week, where we have been introduced to our new Goal – Clean Water and Sanitation. We thought about why it is important to have clean water, and the impact of drinking dirty water.

Phoebe enjoyed Computing this week, where we learned all about the buttons on a keyboard – we focused on the home row keys, and practised typing using both hands by playing a game on Purple Mash! If you would like to practise this at home, you can log onto your Purple Mash account and click on the ‘2 Type’ application.

Ollie, Charlie and Monty have enjoyed Maths this week, where we have been learning about doubling 2-digit numbers. On Friday we had a sneak peek of a practice Arithmetic SAT paper, and we loved using our whiteboards to show our methods when solving the different types of questions.

      Have a lovely weekend.

There will not be a quiz style test, but we will be testing their knowledge of these words in our dictation lesson on Monday 6th January.

      This week!

Jasper L and George L has enjoyed our DT learning this week, where we explored tabs and different ways of joining two pieces of cardboard together. We put these skills into practice by making our very own prison cells – linking our DT learning with our Global Learning topic all about the Police!

Jude is very excited about Christmas, we have spent today participating in lots of Christmassy activities including having a Christmas buffet today! Jude and lots of the boys and girls enjoyed our Football interhouse on Friday afternoon where the children put their PE learning into practice and worked as a team to win as many games as they could!

Jonah loved making our Christmas cards this week – Dahl and Woodson class were lucky enough to pair up and work together to make their lovely Christmas cards which you will be receiving today! The children were amazing and worked so hard in a workshop style classroom setting, cutting, sticking and writing lovely Christmas messages.

The children have continued to work so hard at the end of a very long Autumn Term – we wish you all a restful break and look forward to seeing you all in the New Year for another term of working hard!

      This week!

Ruby and lots of others have enjoyed having the iPads out in our Computing lesson this week, putting our knowledge and skills of algorithms and instructions into practice by controlling Bee-bots and instructing them to get to different objects.

Martha has enjoyed reading this week. Seb enjoyed visiting St Neots Library as part of our trip on Tuesday and learned all about how we can visit the Library for free, borrow up to 12 books at a time for up to 3 weeks – the children got to read a selection of different books and stories, and the children were inspired to get their own books – Sonny has enjoyed reading his own comic!

Phoebe enjoyed our trip to St Neots Museum this week, where we have been learning about the Police – we learned about where the criminals and the prisoners would sleep, we learned that their beds were made out of wood and we also learned that lots of criminals in the Victorian times were actually children and teenagers. We noticed that they were possibly poor or in poverty, and that they needed to go out and steal food, money and toys in order to eat and play.

Jonah has enjoyed Maths this week – we have continued to practice adding and subtracting two digit numbers and 1 digit numbers when we need to bridge through 10 – the children persevered brilliantly and were all successful!

Yesterday we had a very exciting Facetime with the man himself – Father Christmas told us that we have worked really hard this term and have made it to the Nice List! Apparently, one of the teachers is on the naughty list – we can’t work out who it is!!!

      Have a lovely weekend.

      This week!

Bertie has loved our Maths learning this week where we have been subtracting a one digit number from a 2 digit number, but we have had to exchange! It has been challenging but the children have been very determined and we’ve all been successful in our learning 😊.

Hugo has enjoyed writing some poetry this week – we used our senses and imagined we were birds flying through the sky. We thought about what we could see, hear, feel and then wrote some descriptive phrases. We worked hard to improve the presentation of our written work and have produced some lovely poems.

Sonny, Dougie and Martha have enjoyed our Art learning this week where we have learned about Nick Park – the creator of Wallace and Gromit – we looked at the characters and thought about what shapes we could see within the clay and the skills needed to achieve the effect. We even got to have a little sneak peak of the Wallace and Gromit Series, watching ‘The Wrong Trousers!’

Harry loved our Music lesson this week, as we think most of the children did, where we gave them each their own recorder. We looked at how to hold the recorder properly, and how to blow into it properly. The children listened well and understand the contract we made – when to blow and when to hold their recorder in a variety of different positions, including rollercoaster, Pinocchio, pirate and bow tie!

      This week!

Amelia has enjoyed Maths this week where we have been practising using a place value grid to add one-digit numbers to two-digit number, and we have been super resilient when learning how to exchange ten ones for a ten in order to bridge through to the next decade!

Bertie and George have enjoyed improving thei handwriting this week, where we have been continuing to practise the cursive script needed to join our letters.

Ollie has enjoyed Science this week where we have been thinking about our bodies when we exercise.

Phoebe has enjoyed Reading this week where we have been learning about Nick Park – he links really nicely with our Art work where we will be using clay to make our Police Badges. Did you know, Nick Park was the creator of our very own Wallace and Gromit Series, as well as Chicken Run!

Jonah enjoyed our Reading Comprehension where we learned about the Police, including what they need, the support they get and what you need to do to be a Police Officer when you are older!

Seb has enjoyed PE where we have continued to practise our throwing and catching.

We are very proud of how our children have practised and participated in our Year 4 and Year 2 Production of The Wind in the Willows – we hope that you enjoyed the show, the children were fantastic!

      This week!

Nigel has enjoyed Art where we used the sketching skills that we learned last half term to complete an observational drawing of a police badge. Some children remembered how to create different shades by pressing harder and softer using their pencils.

Sunny has enjoyed Maths this week, where we have been practising our addition and subtraction skills to add ones, tens and groups of tens to different numbers.

Sonny has been reading another Roald Dahl Classic at home, George’s Marvellous Medicine, and has loved reading Fantastic Mr Fox in class as it is our class reading book this half term!

Phoebe enjoyed our English lesson today, where we learned about the prefix -un, meaning the opposite of the word it is in front of. We hunted for ‘un’ words and had to find their opposite word!

Sophie has enjoyed History this week where we learned all about crime in London in the past, and how people took it upon themselves to police the areas in the 1700’s – we then realised that they were not very good at their jobs and it took Sir Robert Peel to create the Metropolitan Police Act in 1829, and introduce the Police Force, to keep the community of London much more safe.

Dougie has enjoyed our Power of Reading text, the Magic Finger, which has given us lots of mature discussions linking with our Sustainable Development Goal ‘Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions’ – we have talked about Fox Hunting and the reasons for and against it. The children had some really interesting thoughts and we turned our ideas into a discussion and a debate – the children argued their cases really well and were very grown up in their responses.

If your child would like to sign up to sing at the Buckden Light Switch On event, please do this through Arbor – it should be going live this weekend and Mrs Farmer will begin rehearsals next week in preparation for the occasion!

      This week!

We have introduced our new Global Learning Goal - Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions. We talked about what the United Nations are aiming to achieve through this goal, and talked about 'rules'. We talked about what rules are, places that we have to follow rules and began thinking about who enforces the rules. We had a very interesting discussion about what life would look like if there were no rules, and what life would look like if everyone followed the rules. The children had some really throught provoking ideas and we are excited to see where our learning takes us!

In English we have introduced the character 'Girl' in our new Power of Reading book. We talked about what we know based on a single picture, and we asked lots of questions to the other characters that we introduced later on in the week.

In Maths, we have been looking at 'difference', what it means, and how we can use different strategies to calculate it. We looked at using subtraction, as well as counting on using a numberline to support us in our learning.

In Science, we have begun to think about what 'exercise is' and went outside this afternoon to practise some different types of exercise. We will be thinking about the impact of exercise on our bodies, what happens when we exercise and the short and long term effects of exercise.

It was lovely to meet you all at parents evening this week to discuss your children, how they have settled and their progress so far. If you have any questions, queries or concerns please dont hesitate to catch us at the door or email us at year2@bpa.act-academytrust.org.

Our playground bins are ready for a makeover—and we want YOUR brilliant ideas! The Eco Team is calling on all creative minds to design a brand-new bin that’s fun, functional, and fabulous.

🎨 Your Mission:  Grab an A4 sheet of paper and sketch your dream bin design. Think bold colours, cool shapes, and eco-friendly features. Could it talk? Could it sort recycling? Could it look like a robot or a tree?

🌱 The Eco Team will review all the designs and choose the most awesome one to inspire our new playground bins!  Deadline Friday 7th November.

Thank you for all of your hard work and support over the first half term, we look forward to meeting lots of you properly after half term during our Autumn Parents Evening.

Have a lovely half term and a restful break!

      Best wishes,
      The Year 2 Team

      Reading:

Please read daily with your child and log on Boom Reader. We will be following up with children who are reading less than three times a week.

      Handwriting:

Any opportunity to practise writing your letters using our cursive script at home would greatly help with developing and improving your child’s handwriting. We are focusing on ensuring our small letters are small, our tall letters are tall (and long) and that they are consistent in size.

      Maths:

Please practise on Doodle Maths – ten minutes daily will help your child stay in the Green Zone! We will set an assignment for your child to do each Friday, to be completed by the following Friday.

      Spellings:

We will be sending home a list of words for your child to practise at home each Tuesday.

Don’t forget to practise this week’s spelling rules over the weekend ready for our quiz on Monday morning!

      This week!

Sonny really enjoyed changing his Avatar on his Purple Mash account. If you would like to access Purple Mash from home, please follow this link: https://www.purplemash.com/sch/buckden

Your child’s username is their first name and the first letter of their surname. For example, Miss Freeman would be MissF. The children know their passwords but also know the importance of keeping their password a secret.

Jonah is loving reading Matilda at home with his family – he was excited to tell us that it is a chapter book, written by our Class Author, Roald Dahl! Any opportunities to read at home are fantastic for your child’s reading development, and we love hearing about what you are reading at home so please continue to share this with us.

Dougie has quite liked learning about Habitats and Microhabitats in our Science learning this week. Sunny could tell me that a Microhabitat is a tiny home for Minibeasts inside a larger habitat. Dougie could tell me that an example of a Microhabitat could be a fallen log, soil, a crack in a building or even a can of pop!

Sophie also enjoyed Science as we explored the different plants and animals that live within our local habitat, including the forest area and our school pond! We found a frog, lily pads, algae and we even found mushrooms – we talked about the importance of not picking them as they can be poisonous.

Phoebe has loved that we have finally finished ‘The Last Wolf’ which had a fantastic ending, and she loved creating a map to retell the story. The children then used their story maps to write the story in their own words – Miss Freeman was SO impressed with their stories, and their creativity to tell it in their own way.

Seb, alongside the whole class are loving being in Year 2 and we are continuing to get to know each other and all about ourselves including the things that interest us and the learning that we enjoy!

Please ensure that if you have still got a copy of our class shared reader 'Extreme Earth' that you return it in your child's reading folder on Monday.

      Have a lovely weekend.
