Talk to your adults about what education is, why we need it and what life would be like without one!

Wow, what a FANTASTIC half term we have had settling into the new rules, routines and challenges of year 1. The children have worked SO hard this week, where we have been super busy showing what we have learnt so far in English, Phonics and Maths.

We have continued to explore the part-part whole model using cubes, and finished the week by investigating how many ways we can split the number 10 into different parts. The children recorded their learning using addition number sentences and we are so proud of their confidence and ability in working more independently!

In English we have finally finished our Power of Reading text, Beegu. We have created a class story map showing the different parts of the story, explored Beegu’s feelings at each point in the story and finally put our Beegu ears on and put ourselves in her shoes by writing a diary entry in the first person to talk about what we did when our spaceship crash landed on earth, and how we felt during our time on this planet. The children’s writing has improved already and we are getting super confident in saying our sentences out loud, using our phonic knowledge to hear the different sounds in words, and using a phonic mat to help us write. We are using the conjunctions ‘and’ and ‘but’ in our writing, and remembering to use capital letters at the beginning of our sentences and a full stop to finish our sentences!

In Science we used our sense of touch by putting our hands in a box and feeling the different items – we talked about words to describe how things feel, such as bumpy, rough, cold, hard, smooth and prickly.

In RE we finished our topic on the story of creation by creating a piece of artwork to show what we could remember about how God created our world. The children produced some lovely pieces of art using lots of pictures and colour!

In PE the children performed their travel, roll, travel routines that we have been building up in our gymnastics sessions, and loved being an audience and talking about what their friends did well and how we could improve our sequence next time.

In Global learning we have been using playdough to create an aerial view of our classroom, and using our Design skills by thinking about freestanding structures in the classroom such as tables and chairs.

The children have used all of the cardboard boxes that you sent in throughout the half term by creating their own prototypes of freestanding structures in the form of classroom tables for the purpose of a child who need something to learn on at school.

We talked about joining two pieces of cardboard together, with the challenge of only being able to use glue. We then designed our table by thinking about the shape of the table top and the number of legs it would need to be strong and stable, and showed using a sketch how we would join the legs to the table top using a TAB. The children practised folding pieces of card and gluing them to another piece of card, as well as reinforcing the join using another piece of card to strengthen the join. Please see above some of their final designs and finished products! We are so impressed with how independently the children worked, and how the children worked together to overcome any problems that they had, such as legs falling off, legs being different lengths and legs that wouldn’t hold the weight of the table top!

We have finally finished our class reader, The Giraffe, The Pelly and Me, by Roald Dahl and look forward to starting another class reader next half term.

Please note, the Year 1 email address in a direct way of contacting us at year1@buckdenacademy.org

Please continue to have a go at the Maths activities online on Abacus, and don't forget to read as often as you can, writing in your reading records when you do!

Have an absolutely wonderful and restful half term break, and we look forward to seeing you back on the 1st November for another fun-filled and super busy Autumn 2! The countdown to Christmas will begin soon!

Take care and stay safe,
Miss Freeman and Willow Class.
